A member of a well-known and respected Grane family, he lived at Heap Clough until he moved, before the war, to Blackpool where he was employed as a tram-conductor. In October 1914 he enlisted in the King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment and served in Gallipoli from April 1915 to October 1915. He then served in Egypt, and in February 1916 went with the regiment to Mesopotamia (now Iraq). Whilst there he contracted malaria and was sent to hospital in India. On his recovery he worked temporarily in the recruiting office in Bombay from where he was invalided back to England. He went to Blackpool Sanitorium where he later died of pneumonia following typhoid fever. Pte. Margerison’s body was brought home by his family to be buried in Holden Hall Cemetery, Grane Road. Four soldier relatives acted as pall-bearers at his funeral. He lies in Grave C1050. Holden Hall Cemetery is owned by Rossendale Borough Council. It opened in 1903 and covers over eleven acres. There is a total of thirty two soldiers graves from the 1914-1918 war and four from the 1939-1945 war.

GRANE SOLDIER'S FUNERAL - COFFIN BORNE TO GRAVE BY FOUR NEPHEWS FROM THE COLOURS

Private Enoch Margerison, King's Own Royal Lancaster Regiment, who died at Blackpool Sanatorium on Sunday, was buried yesterday (Thursday) afternoon at Haslingden Cemetery, the Rev. E.H. Murdock (vicar of Grane) officiating.
The deceased who was 37 years old, enlisted in October, 1914, went to the front at the beginning of 1915, contracted malaria in 1916, and was transferred later to a recruiting staff in Bombay.  Before enlisting he was a conductor on the Blackpool trams.  He lived at Haslingden Grane, and is on Grane Church roll of honour.
The principal mourners were: - Mr. and Mrs. John Margerison, Mr. and Mrs. William Margerison, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Heap, Mr. John Thomas and Miss Mary Margerison, Miss Lizzie and Mrs. E. Margerison, Mr. Fred and Miss Annie Tattersall, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sutcliffe, Mr and Mrs. Taylor, Mr and Mrs. Fielding, Mrs. Barnes and Mrs. Ward, Mr. and Mrs. Forshaw, and Mr. Robert Holden.
Representatives of Littleborough Bowling Club carried the coffin into the church, and the deceased's four soldier nephews carried it to the grave.
