Newspaper Report:

Lance Corporal Ernest Firth, East Lancs Regiment, who was in the office of the borough treasurer of Haslingden (Mr. F.A. Green), from March, 1915 up to his joining up in March 1916, and was about 24 years of age, has died from wounds.  Shrapnel wounds in the right leg and the development of gangrene necessitated the removal of the limb.  The operation was quite successful and for a short time afterwards the patient was cheery and bright.  Suddenly he took a turn for the worse and died at an Australian Clearing Station in France.
Deceased was son of Mr. Joseph S. Firth, of Westfield Street, Osset.  He came from Osset to Haslingden, was very popular among his colleagues at the Municipal offices, and a valued official of the corporation.  In a letter to Mr. Green the father expesses his thanks for the kindness shown to his son whilst he was at Haslingden.
