Mr. and Mrs. William Halstead, of 12 Parkinson Street, Haslingden, have received official intimation of the death of their eldest son Private Edward Halstead, of the East Lancashire Regt., who on August 11th was killed in action "Somewhere in France." The deceased, who was 31 years of age, joined the Army on April 8th of this year, and about six weeks ago was home on short leave. Immediately after the haslingden holidays he was sent out to the front, and met a hero's death within a week of his arrival. He was formerly a weaver at Vine Grove Mill, and was a member of the Weavers Union committee. He was associated with Haslingden Parish Church and Schools, and was greatly esteemed by all who knew him. Private E. Haworth, one of his pals, has written a sympathetic letter to the bereaved mother, stating that her son was killed instantaneously by shell and that he did not suffer. He states that he was a good pal, and won the respect of the company. His younger brother, Private Harry Halstead, who went out with the East Lancashire Territorials early in the war, was wounded at the Dardanelles and lost his right eye.
2) At the Haslingden Parish Church on Sunday last, the Rev. A. Winfield, vicar of Helmshore, conducted a memorial service to the late Private Edward Halstead, of the East Lancashire Regiment, who was killed in action in France on August 11th, under circumstances previously reported in the "Guardian." The service was attended by the parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Halstead, of 12, Parkinson Street, Haslingden, and by the family, including Private Harry Halstead, a younger brother of the deceased. The preacher paid a high tribute to the courage and devotion of the soldier hero.
