Newspaper report:
Pte. Harry Spencer 27 years of age, son of Mr and Mrs John Spencer of the Black Bull Hotel Haslingden has died at Rouen from wounds received in action. Pte Spencer who was 27 years of age and enlisted about 12 months ago was very popular in Haslingden. He was a baker by trade and was employed by Mrs P.R. Barnes Manchester Road. He was a young man of fine physique and took a great interest in boxing, in which he had done a good deal of training. He received his injuries in action a month ago and was sent to hospital at Rouen to which place his mother made the journey to see him. He was shot through the head and no hope could be entertained of his recovery. He died last weekend having been unconscious most of the time and was buried at St.Sever cemetery.
